Artificial grass in winter

Artificial grass in winter – what to consider?

Artificial grass is very hard-wearing and successfully withstands all weather conditions. Even snow and ice can hardly damage a high-quality artificial turf pitch. Therefore, you do not need to pay much attention to the care and use of artificial grass in winter. For more information, see our artificial grass guide.

In autumn, regularly remove leaves from the artificial grass
Remove leaves regularly, because sometimes the first snowfall comes unexpectedly and suddenly. If there are still leaves on the artificial grass, it will be very firm and almost impossible to remove in winter and difficult to remove in spring. If you have regularly cleaned the artificial grass of coarse dirt and leaves with a hard street broom before the first snowfall, you can enjoy a beautiful green lawn immediately after the snow melts.

Snow and ice on artificial grass

In winter, a lot of snow and ice gets on artificial grass. High quality artificial grass has good drainage so this is not a problem. However, there is a risk that the fibres of artificial grass will harden and become brittle in winter. It is therefore better to use a plastic shovel instead of a metal shovel for shovelling snow. This prevents the artificial grass from breaking.

Do not remove hard layers of snow and ice by hand. If the fibres of the artificial grass get frozen into the ice, they will break off. Walking on artificial grass in winter is no problem either. High quality artificial grass can easily withstand this load without breaking.

Cleaning artificial grass when there is no frost

In principle, cleaning and maintaining artificial grass is very simple. In most cases, regular brushing with a broom is sufficient. If the artificial grass does get dirty, cleaning is still very simple and intuitive.

Leaves and coarser dirt can be easily removed with a broom or a leaf blower. Especially before the onset of winter, it is important to remove all foliage from the artificial grass, otherwise the foliage will freeze and become very hard, making it difficult to remove. Vacuum cleaning is not recommended in most cases, but it can be useful, especially on balconies.

In case of contamination with animal droppings or similar, cleaning with a bucket of water or a garden hose is often sufficient. Before doing this, use gloves or a shovel to remove the worst dirt. If the dirt is still visible, you can also use a dishwashing detergent (preferably a climate-neutral one). The artificial grass will not be damaged by the pet’s business if it is cleaned properly. It is important not to use chemicals or contaminants for cleaning, as these can be discharged directly into groundwater.
